How to Check If a Business Name Is Taken

5 min read

A free domain does not mean a free name. Plenty of founders register a domain, print packaging, and then discover an established shop, podcast, or creator already owns the name in search results. Here is the order to check things in.

1. Check the domain registry, not a reseller

Reseller search boxes are designed to sell you alternatives. What you want is a straight registry answer on whether the exact domain is registered, across the extensions you would realistically use — .com first, then .co, .io, .net, or a category-specific option.

2. Search the name the way a customer would

Put the name in quotation marks in a search engine and read the first two pages. You are looking for anyone who already dominates that word: a retailer, a publication, a place, a film, a large brand in an adjacent category. If page one is crowded, you will be fighting for your own name for years.

3. Check the social handles you actually need

Check the exact handle on the platforms where your customers are. A handle that requires three extra words tacked on will hurt word of mouth, because people will search the short version and land on someone else.

4. Look for unregistered, active businesses

This is the step most people skip. Small shops, studios, podcasts, newsletters, and creators build real brand rights through use, long before any registration appears in a database. Look through marketplaces, app stores, podcast directories, and creator platforms for the exact name and near-identical variations.

5. Search the trademark databases

Search the national and regional trademark registers for your market, and check the classes that cover what you sell. A registration in an unrelated class may be survivable; an identical mark in your own class usually is not.

Treat everything above as research, not legal clearance. When a name is worth real money to you, have a trademark professional review it before launch.

The short version

Open domain, quiet search results, free handles, no active look-alike business, and a clean class in the register — that is a name worth building.
